Conjure fond memories of the beach with this collection of Florida seashells, sand and driftwood preserved in a triangular beveled glass case. Shells may include murex, augers, tulips, Whelks, sun-dials, tritons and conchs. Handmade in USA by Barbara Knapp of Glass Gardens. Various sizes, $48-$92. Due to their fragile nature, seashell cases cannot be shipped and are available for In-store pick-up only. Sorry!

Brooke Pottery will be open late until 9 pm this Friday, but closed Sunday 3/26 and Monday 3/27 in observance of Memorial Day.

Brooke Pottery is pleased to share new work by Adam Hood, a 28-year-old woodturner based right here in Lakeland. The turned wood vessels are glorious explorations in form, with the natural wood-grain patterns highlighted to their fullest beauty.

In 2012, Adam Hood was one of 50 woodworkers to receive an Educational Opportunity Grant from the American Association of Woodturners. The organization’s magazine, American Woodturner, has a wonderful article on Adam and his mentors titled “The Heart of a Community: The Story of Adam Hood”. A collaboration of Polk County woodturners has helped Adam Hood build his studio by donating tools, offering advice, and working with Robust Tools to produce a custom seated lathe. The article is a remarkable story of community, and Adam is finding his own ways to give back to others. We encourage you to visit Brooke Pottery to see Adam’s work and read the article or read it online.

A bit more about Adam Hood:

I am 28 yrs. old. I was hurt in a motorcycle accident in 2007 resulting in me becoming a paraplegic. After searching for something to keep me busy I found a woodturning club based in Bartow, Florida. Thanks to the Polk County Woodturners Association I fell in love with woodturning. I was woodturning as a hobby until someone asked if I sold my work. I never thought about it but that was a way to supplement my Social Security income. I take pride in the work that I produce. When I’m in the shop working, I feel at home and at peace producing these quality made wooden items.

Functional stoneware by Hank Goodman makes the perfect gift, fitting into both traditional and contemporary settings. Pieces may be used in the microwave and regular oven below 400 degrees and are dishwasher safe and safe to use with all foods. Come shop the new arrivals at Brooke Pottery. We are open until 9 pm every Friday.

Wood warms twice” is a popular expression in the densely forested western North Carolina Mountains, referring to the warmth generated in the chopping and burning of wood. But though Hank Goodman’s distinctive wood ash glazes, wood warms a third time in their lasting beauty. Hank recycles large amounts of wood ash collected from families who heat with wood, which in turn gives his stoneware the subdued and sensuous glazes that are its trademark.

“I like ash glazes because they create a busy surface as they melt and pull together to form ‘streams’ or ‘stringers’”, Hank adds. “This wet look of the glaze emphasizes the form of each piece rather than hiding or detracting from it”.

Hank’s stoneware can be found in a wide variety of homes and offices, complementing contemporary décor and blending into more formal settings. The ceramic style he pursued in the Southwest has matured in the North Carolina mountains, where he lives with his wife Vicki. Hank finds the rugged terrain and natural beauty to provide a rich environment for his creativity.

About Hayden Brook Studios:

Artistic hand crafted glass work dates back nearly 4000 years. Examples of Ancient Egyptian & Roman handmade fused glass can be found in museums around the world. Combining this ancient fine craft with state of the art technology, Hayden Brook Studios makes exquisite, finely crafted jewelry at affordable prices.

Hayden Brook Studios works with dichroic glass (di-chroic means two colored) . This type of glass transmits light in one wavelength, and reflects lights in two other wavelengths. It is coated with electronically excited metallic particles in a vacuum chamber. Large sheets of glass are cut into small pieces. These pieces are specially arranged & melted together in a kiln to form accent pieces for our jewelry. The glass melts at approximately 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.

Laurie Hayden & her husband/ volunteer partner, Brook Bergey draw their inspiration from experiences living, & studying art in: California, Nevada, & Peace Corps (Africa & Jamaica), as well as traveling in Europe & North America. They are currently living in Pennsylvania, their mutual home state.

Save 50% on all Box For the Birds wood bird house kits while supplies last. Originally $38-$43, these kits are now $19-$23 online and in the shop. Box for the Birds house kits are a great afternoon project. Designed as an interlocking puzzle, the birdhouses are easy to assemble. No glues or fasteners required. Paint it, decorate it as a mixed media college, or leave it natural. Box for the Birds kits are eco-friendly. They are handmade in USA using Baltic plywood and come in low-impact, flat packaging. Designed by Michael Oliveri Studio in Athens,GA.

The “Right” birdhouse, below left, is a nod to the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. What a perfect fit for Lakelanders who reside near Florida Southern College. It’s pretty amazing that our city has an architectural treasure of such significance.

The Original Box for the Birds has a traditional pitched roof, while the third birdhouse kit is shaped like a church. Cute!
